LCF Mom: District Parents are Resources to Tap (Video)

Parent Leslie Helbing plans to poll the most active parents in the community to find folks who can offer non-financial resources such as skills, space for meetings and time. She'd like to collaborate on ways to help the district save some money.

La Cañada is fortunate to have gobs of over-educated under-utilized parents. So PTSA vice president Leslie Helbing proposes: let's use them.

Noting that she was "frustrated'' because so many parents want to help teachers and administrators, but don't know how, Helbing addressed the La Cañada Unified School District governing board Tuesday to say she plans to form a parent group that will collate resources.

"We don't need to throw money at all problems,'' Helbing told Patch.

Many parents hold master's degrees, speak more than one language, have teaching experience or have access to spaces that could be used for meetings and other events.

Helbing pointed out that she's not proposing parents be imposing, but rather offer assistance to teachers and administrators that could chip away their extra responsibilities, such as offering campus tours, bookkeepping, photo copying, and emailng parents about upcoming events.

She likened the potential help to each teacher having his or her own assistant.
