Poll: What Should be Required for LCUSD to Accept Summer School Credit?

With weeks to go before students return to class at La Cañada Unified School District, one board member thinks it's the perfect time to ask for input about next year's summer school. 

Andrew Blumenfeld's Education Action Committee solicited feedback from email subscribers, trying to see if there's community consensus about whether a minimum number of minutes in the class should be mandated for administrators to accept out-of-district classes for LCUSD credit. Blumenfeld further asked for opinions on whether the district should rely on the accreditation process for accepting summer school credit. 

Last fall, district officials looked to see whether summer coursework taken at places like ,  and  were equally as challenging as a year-long class taken at . Summer programs had been accused of giving "easy A's'' and thereby lessening the integrity of the high school transcript. In November, the governing board opted against implementing changes to the current system of accepting Hillside and other out-of-district summer credits, voting 3-2 to allow the classes to continue to count toward graduation.

Since then, the District has considered other possible policies to govern how, when, and from where LCUSD accepts summer school credit on the LCHS transcript. The official adoption of any proposal won't happen until after the start of the regular school year, which allows more time for the community to weigh in, Blumenfeld wrote.

"It is still uncertain what policy will be proposed. However, given that this conversation will likely take place immediately after the school year begins, I wanted to put it on your radar, and to solicit your thoughts on the issue now,'' Blumenfeld wrote in his Education Action Committee email.
