Update: Puss Gets the Boot, Finds New Home in Glendale

Well, that didn’t take long.

Spartaca, the cat who’s being expelled from after living in the football offices for the last nine years, has found a new home in the Oakmont neighborhood of Glendale.

Patch reader Liz Nazarian saw the article about  and advising the coaches they may no longer keep their champion mouser in the building. For nearly a decade, the 9-year-old cat has chased away vermin – but using an animal to keep away other animals is not the best plan, McFeat said in a telephone interview Wednesday. McFeat pointed out it was important to him that the cat find a home where she can be cared for properly. 

On Thursday, Nazarian volunteered to take Spartaca home. 

“I’ve got a lot of windows she can look out. I think she’ll like it here,’’ said Nazarian, who often works from home and recently lost her two cats, who lived to be 19 and 21 years old.

“It’s going to be traumatic for her, moving after nine years, but I want to make it as smooth as possible,’’ she said adding she’d like to invite students or fculty who got to know Spartaca over the years to come and visit her after she gets settled.

New Spartan football coach James Sims didn’t expect to grow so fond of the paws’ presence in his new office environs, but he did.

It’s kind of sad. I’m looking a her right now and it won’t seem right without her here,’’ Sims wrote in an email Thursday. He pointed out that the maintenance man found four rats behind a trash can on Wednesday.

“They are probably mapping out plans to infiltrate the locker room and weight room again since Spartaca is leaving,’’ he joked.

Girls track coach Casey Mollett, who’s fed and cared for Spartaca since she's been a Spartan, said finding her another home is bittersweet. He hates losing her, but the fact that she’s going to a lifelong cat lover softens the blow, he said.

“This has been hard, but it’s wonderful that she’s going to such a good home,’’ said Mollett, who’s bumped back his out-of-town trip so he can bring Spartaca to her new owner without further ado.
