DANA POINT, CA — Travelers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watching vessel were treated to a delightful surprise this past weekend: a grey whale mother and her baby calf.

The pair was spotted while the tour boat was heading north in front of the Dana Point Headlands on Sunday.

"This pair stayed very close to shore and we relocated them off Aliso Canyon —where they seemed to have a bottlenose dolphin escort leading their way," Dana Wharf COO Donna Kalez told Patch. "Occasionally, this little whale would get ahead of its mom, but never strayed far."
