LAKE ELSINORE, CA — The race for California’s 42nd Congressional District seat pits long-time Republican incumbent Ken Calvert (R-Corona) against a college professor with a Ph.D. in history, William "Liam" O'Mara (D-Lake Elsinore).

Calvert is a career politician who was first elected to the house in the early 1990s. Despite numerous challenges in ensuing decades, Calvert has gone undefeated since that first congressional win.

In the March 3 presidential primary election, Calvert captured 97,781 votes or 58.2 percent of ballots cast, compared to O’Mara who garnered 38,506 votes or 22.9 percent. The two front runners beat out one other Democrat in the race.
