Victim ID'd As Southwest RivCo Man In RivCo Sheriff's Homicide Investigation
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department identified the 40-year-old man over the weekend; his death remains under investigation.

CORONA, CA — A physical altercation turned deadly Sunday in unincorporated Corona, as Riverside County Sheriff's Department Homicide Detectives investigate.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., Lake Mathews Sheriff's Station deputies arrived at a business in the 9000 block of Pulsar Court on reports of a physical altercation.
"Upon arrival, deputies located an off-duty paramedic and firefighter providing lifesaving measures to an unresponsive adult male," Sgt. Mike Kelleher said.

Despite lifesaving measures, the male, later identified as Rene Nieves, a 40-year-old resident of Corona, was pronounced deceased at the scene, he said.
Based on the circumstances, the Riverside Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation, according to Kelleher.

During the investigation, an individual involved in the altercation was identified and transported to the station to speak with investigators. The individual was cooperative with the investigation and was later released, he said.
The investigation into Nieves's death remains ongoing, and the case will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for review at a later time.
There is no threat to the public, and no additional suspects are believed to be involved. This case is an active investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.
