RIVERSIDE, CA — A suspected DUI driver arrested by a Riverside Police Department officer died in a hospital, authorities said Saturday.

The officer allegedly saw a vehicle run a red light around 8 p.m. last Saturday at Garfield Street and Van Buren Boulevard, according to the RPD.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and observed that the driver appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.

The officer detained the driver, identified as 32-year-old Jose Luis Serrano Jr. of Riverside, and requested medical aid due to his apparent level of intoxication, police said. Serrano admitted having taken methamphetamine.

Riverside Fire Department paramedics took him to a hospital, where his condition deteriorated and he died about 12:30 the following morning.

The exact cause of Serrano's death was pending toxicology results by the Riverside County coroner's office, police said..

An investigation was underway by the RPD Robbery-Homicide Unit and the Riverside County Sheriff's Force Investigations Detail, police said.
