Another tragic story involving Spring Valley last week, as a man committed suicide by jumping off a freeway overpass near the SR 54 - SR 125 interchange. The man was later found to have been suspected of strangling his girlfriend and her two young children in Chula Vista, earlier that morning.

Congratulations to Monte Vista senior Diana Lazo, who won the presitious Gates Millennium Scholarship, which will pay for her advanced education from undergraduate through a doctorate program.

High school sports playoff action was fast and furious last week. The Monte Vista  baseball team was eliminated despite a great pitching performance from Nick Sabo. Meanwhile, the Grossmont softball team claimed the CIF title with an upset win over Poway.

Based on survey of East County communities done by the CA Endowment ReConnect group, Spring Valley was found to be an "active community" with its residents enjoying walking and biking trails, and spending time at local parks.

Diners at the Red Door and Wellington restaurants in Mission Hills will now be able to eat local farm-fresh produce, as the Red Door Family Garden, located on Mt. Helix, was started on Wednesday with the planting of celery seeds. The first crops are expected to be ready in about 8 weeks.
