Grossmont Remains Unbeaten with Comeback Win

Grossmont JV football player Michael Byerline highlights the varsity team's come-from-behind victory over Steele Canyon last Friday.

The following game recap blog was written by Grossmont student and JV football player Michael Byerline:

It was a close game on Friday night but the Hillers pulled off an exciting win continuing their win streak to seven as their demanding offense and powerful defense worked together in the second half to come out with the big win and to set the tone for the rest of league.

Grossmont started off the game with the ball on the 25-yd line. But after several strong drives, they were on the opposite side of the field only to score on a 20-yd touchdown run by Marcus Flisher.

During the kickoff, the Foothillers tackled the Cougars returner on the 5-yd line. But several 1st downs and a 30-yd catch-and-run by #22 Tommy Tyler set up and 8-yd TD run by Steele Canyon's Lonnie Tuff to tie the score at 7-7. On the ensuing possesion, Hillers quarterback Anthony Lawrence was intercepted by #46 Jonathon Gauthier. But Steele went three-and-out as DE Hayden Herrington forces the punt with a huge sack. But on their next drive Steele Canyon's Nathan Murry got a 60-yd interception return. It went from bad to worse for Grossmont after the kickoff, when a Grossmont fumble gave the Cougars the ball again on the 4-yd line.

Herrington once again gets a big sack on third down forcing the Cougars to kick a field goal that is no good. After another 3-and-out by Grossmont, Steele scored on a 1-yd TD run by #21 Lashawn Ware.

Grossmont caught fire in the second half. A 30-yd QB keep Anthony Lawrence led to a 1-yd TD catch for Jeff Bowers. Following another Steele Canyon touchdown, Grossmont faced a fourth down.

With a bit of trickery #27 Trent Galkoski for Grossmont successfully completed a punt fake, keeping the drive alive and leading to a 4-yd TD catch by Bowers. and Christian Brooks would tie it with a two point conversion.

But within the next few plays, Steel took the lead with a 66-yd catch-and-run by #12 Ricky Francis.

After Grossmont and Steel and forced to punt, Grossmont got the ball with about three minutes remaining. A quick score from Bowers ties the game at 35 all, but the Foothillers weren’t done yet.

The defense makes a huge 3-and-out stop and forced Steele Canyon to punt.

The Foothillers marched down the field and Lawrence connected with #8 Brett Stone in the back of the end zone with 10 seconds on the clock.

On their last play, the Cougars were unable to complete the hail-marry and with that, Grossmont continues their winning streak to 7-0.

Head Coach Tom Karlo what he thought helped them the most in pulling out this win.

“Tempo is what really did it for us," Karlo said. "We were fast in the first half but really stepped it up in the second half and it just tired them out.”
