Kassandra King: "Perhaps parents and grandparents will partner with their children to learn the best game on planet Earth and incorporate it into their home game nights and family time."

To the editor:
You may have heard my announcement at the December meeting of the La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club about City of La Mesa offering new chess lessons as part of its community classes.
These lessons start on Feb. 8. This is a new opportunity for folks of all ages.

We are marketing the chess lessons as “Chess Challenge” and as an intergenerational activity—hoping perhaps parents and grandparents will partner with their children to learn the best game on planet Earth and incorporate it into their home game nights and family time.
The first session begins Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 6-7 p.m. at the Dallas Street Fire Station. The session is nine weeks and the fee for residents is $81, with a discount for second family member at $63.

I am an avid chess player who can be found on Wednesdays at the La Mesa Library for chess time 3-5 (we usually go until 6 p.m.). I have been playing since I was a toddler and teach in several elementary schools in East County with the company Academic Chess. Also, I am the chess instructor at College Preparatory Middle School, the new charter school in La Mesa.
The class is listed on the website, and people can register online or just show up at the first class and register then. Also, late registrations are fine.
La Mesa has never offered it before, so we are excited and hope to have a great turn out! I am attaching the promotional flier hereto as well.
