DUI Checkpoint Slows Traffic on State Route 125—and Stops Some Drunken Drivers
La Mesa police join sheriff's deputies, Chula Vista and Escondido police and other agencies in a Spring Street checkpoint at the La Mesa border with Spring Valley.
Dozens of sheriff's deputies and police from La Mesa, Escondido, Chula Vista and elsewhere shined flashlights into hundreds of cars halted Friday night on southbound Spring Street under the state Route 125 and 94 overpasses. Their mission: Find drunken drivers. A DUI checkpoint in a light drizzle diverted some drivers, but it also held up traffic on southbound Route 125. At 9 p.m., cars were backed up past Lemon Avenue, about 1.5 miles away. La Mesa RSVP senior volunteers tallied cars and kept police fueled with pastries and coffee during the checkpoint, which was to last until about 2 a.m. Saturday.
