Soccer Coaches Group Picks Helix Grad for National Scholar-Athlete Honor

Cal State San Marcos goalkeeper and captain Kaycee Gunion makes third team of collegiate list.

Kaycee Gunion, a 2008 graduate of Helix Charter High School, will be one of 72 collegiate soccer stars to be recognized for achievement in class as well as sports Jan. 14 in Kansas City.

Late last month, goalkeeper Gunion, who hails from Santee, was named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America to the Women’s College Scholar All-America Third Team.

She will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon at the Kansas City Convention in conjunction with the 2012 NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.

Gunion was captain of soccer team at Cal State San Marcos, and compiled a 3.53 grade-point average. She is majoring in kinesiology.

She was an NAIA First Team All-American in 2011, and she finished her final collegiate season with a 0.32 goals against average, ranking her second in the nation, the school says. Gunion posted 15 shutouts in 20 games this season.

“She allowed just six goals in the team’s 20 games, playing a major role in the team's program-best record of 15-4-1,” said the school.

She was only two Californians to be named to the NSCAA scholar-athlete team in the College Division (along with Amy Cochran of Yorba Linda.)

In 2011, for the second time in her career, CSUSM Gunion was named the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year; and for the third time.

“Since coming to CSUSM as a freshman in 2008, Gunion has been a First Team All-Conference selection in all four of her seasons,” the school said.
