Helix Softball Jumps on Mount Miguel Early and Often in Blowout

The Scotties were buoyed by a nine-run explosion in the first inning.

Wanting to make a statement that they plan on being a factor in the league this season after a disappointing 2012 campaign, the Helix Charter High School softball team trounced fellow Grossmont league rivals Mount Miguel 15-1 on Monday.

The Scotties scored nine runs in the first inning, essentially putting the game away on their first time to bat. They were fueled by three Mount Miguel errors in the opening frame. They added six more in the fourth inning.

Head coach Emily Kowalski said that having that big a lead early is both good and bad.

"You kind of have to make sure that when you go back out there, you don't have a letdown defensively, and let them back in it," said the second year head coach. "But [my team] didn't do that. They shut the other team down and we were fortunate enough to put a few more runs on the board."

Senior pitcher Keana Nakata tossed three innings of shutout ball, and added a two-run double in the fourth inning to extend the Helix lead. She was relieved by Marissa Hampton, who gave up only two hits in her two innings.

The Scotties got contributions from up and down the lineup. Senior Sydni Toilolo had an RBI double in the first inning. Junior catcher Desirae Bordine blasted a two-run double over the head of the centerfielder in the first inning as well, as they jumped all over Matadors pitcher Nicole Vargas.

Senior Kai Penn had a two-run triple in the fourth inning, junior outfielder Bray Monterossa had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, and senior Chanelle Ward had three runs scored.

The win moves Helix's record to 1-1 on the year. They travel to Orange Glen on Wednesday.

It was the first loss of the season for Mount Miguel (2-1), who face Mater Dei Catholic on Wednesday. Senior Priscilla Gomez had two hits and an RBI for the Matadors Monday.
