Clever Ken: TV/Radio Personality and Historian is La Mesa’s Mark Twain

Kramer's Twitter account and fake newspaper reveal comedic genius lurking behind TV persona.

Ken Kramer, the longtime La Mesan behind the history show About San Diego on KPBS, is funny as well as smart.  His own past was detailed in this La Mesa Courier story.

But his online presence reveals a wicked wit.

In early 2010, he launched a one-page online “newspaper” featuring the bogus stories of the fictional town of Corco.

His latest edition, dated Nov. 31, 2011, gives results of a mayoral election under the headline “Imbecile Elected Mayor.”

Facing no opposition after scandal forced his challenger from the race, Frank Imbecile, owner of Mal Motors, and a regular at The Belly Buster Buffet, will take the oath office at the groin in Henshaw Park this afternoon at 2 PM, thus becoming the 23rd Chief Executive of Corco, weather permitting. Citizens are invited to attend, and bring a congratulatory gift, or simply drop it in the mail if unable to be [there] in person.

He runs corrections, such as this one in the May 30, 2011, edition:

In a recent edition of My Best Post, it was erroneously reported that famed theoretical physicist Dr. Albert Einstein would serve as guest caller at The Ambleton Square Dance Festival on Saturday at 1:00. The event will actually occur at 1:30.

The shortest—and sweetest—item in My Best Post may have been: Today’s Prayer appears in the financial section

His tweets confine him to 140 characters but also boast clever climactic turns.

  • [kenkramertv] emphatically denies he had secret 13-year affair with a contortionist from Canoga Park. She was a contrabassist and it was ten years, tops!
  • [kenkramertv] is disappointed that Kobe Bryant would go to Italy to play for Virtus Bologna, when he could have stayed here and played for Oscar Mayer.
  • [kenkramertv] Headed to body shop to have some dings and dents removed. Then may also have a few things done to the car.

In his La Mesa Courier profile, he gives hints of his sense of humor.

As we learn:

As a 20-year resident of La Mesa, he has been witness to many changes in his chosen community. “This is a much cooler place than many people think. Years ago they called it the Pasadena of San Diego. Now, we have young families, musicians, and creative people. It’s a charming village where people know one another on a first name basis.” Commenting on La Mesa turning 100, Kramer quips: “She doesn’t look it.”
