Some local deadlines loom over the coming week.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
The deadline for high schoolers to apply for scholarships is quickly approaching. It is recommended that students apply a few weeks in advance, so the time is now, as most deadlines are late April or early May.

Stormberg Orthodontics is offering a $1,000 Scholarship to a senior who is or was a patient. The applicants must be planning to attend college, GPA, 500 words. Essay on theme. Application deadline is April 20.
Helix Foundation Scholarship for Seniors. Applications should list desire to attend college, must carry 3.5 or higher GPA, community service, extra-curricular, employed, and a summary of your future goals. Deadline May 7, no later than 1 p.m. to Mrs. Cech, in the Career Center.
PROPERTY TAXES
The second installment of property taxes is due April 10. Five county offices will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays to accommodate late filers.

TAX DAY
The deadline to submit your federal and state taxes for the 2011 year is Tuesday, April 17.
Win Two Tickets To See the Dalai Lama
Tickets for the Dalai Lama’s appearance at UC San Diego on April 18 were gone within hours, but Patch is conducting a photo contest that ends the morning of Friday, April 13, with two tickets as the grand prize. The Tibetan spiritual leader will be talking about global warming, climate change and its effects on humans and the economy. Here’s how you can win the tickets: Take a photo of yourself incorporating environmentally conscious practices in your everyday life. That can be anything from shopping with a reusable grocery bag, composting in your back yard, or rolling up your sleeves for a beach cleanup. Short videos will be accepted, too.

WRITE OUT LOUD EVENT AT SAN PASQUAL WINERY
Write Out Loud and San Pasqual Winery are joining forces for a night of reading and wine on Tuesday, May 1. Admission is free and there will be a no-host wine bar. Seating is limited so those interested must RSVP by April 24. Write Out Loud's The Big Read: Shades of Edgar Allan Poe program will be featured with a reading from The Cask of the Amontillado. La Mesa City Councilman Mark Arapostathis and Write Out Loud Co-Founder Walter Ritter will be in attendance.
