Mexican Burrito 'Outta Bounds' With Meaty Goodness

Latest installment of The Burrito Blotter hits up Paloma's Taco Shop in Spring Valley.

As a raging carnivore, there are few things that are better than combining meats and letting the flavors meld together. See: chicken cordon bleu, surf and turf, and my personal favorite, bacon-wrapped scallops.

So whenever I see the opportunity to combine two meats together in a burrito, I jump. Hence my enthusiasm when scanning the menu at and seeing a burrito called "The Mexican," ($4.99) which features carne asada and chorizo.

The very thought of it had me salivating while sitting at my booth, waiting for them to call out my order number. Let's see how the reality compared to the anticipation.

Tortilla
A little disappointed with the burrito. There were a few areas of the burrito that were soft and doughy, while other parts, especially those near the ends were a little crispier and chewy.  Consistency would have been nice, but I'm nitpicking here, as you'll see.

Carne Asada/Chorizo
Normally, if there were two ingredients this prominent, they would be categorized separately, but the whole point of this burrito in my mind is to highlight the flavor combination, so that's the way I'll play it.

In a word: amazing. Both the carne and the chorizo had the essence of their own unique flavors, but the combination of the two was... to steal a Guy Fieri phrase, "outta bounds." The spicy chorizo gave a unique saltiness to the carne, while the carne helped cut the grease from the chorizo. If there was some kind of hybrid steer-pig that was conceived in some kind of laboratory, this is what its meat would taste like. The carne was fork tender as well, which made it all the more enjoyable.

Guacamole
The guacamole provided a creamy, cool contrast to the hot and spicy meat mixture, but I found it a little lacking. A couple more small dollops inside the burrito would have balanced it out even more.

Overall
Maybe it was because it was so good that I ate it so quickly, or maybe this is a legitimate gripe, but the burrito seemed a little on the smallish side. After eating it, I could have easily put down another one, but again, that's perhaps a credit to its quality. This was a truly tasty burrito. Maybe, adding some fresh pico de gallo would have provided a bit of acidity to break up flavorful meat and give a fresh cool kick. However, it if ain't broke...
