Question of the Day: District Elections for Grossmont-Cuyamaca Board?

Tonight the community college district board will hold the first of two public hearings on new maps.

The five-member Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District governing board is now chosen by an at-large vote of the entire district. But under plans recently announced, board members will be elected by district, starting in June 2012. The first of two hearings is set for 6:30 tonight (Tuesday) on how the five new districts should be drawn.  See details here.

Officials say: “The college district is one of many government agencies around California that are revising their elections process to comply with the California Voting Rights Act of 2001. District elections help ensure that minority populations are equitably represented at the voting booth.”
