Small Stretch of University Avenue to Be Closed Nightly for Sewer Pipe Work

Monthlong project starting Wednesday will affect motorists between Harbinson and Massachusetts.

Updated at 12:15 a.m. Feb. 15, 2012

Hoping to create the least disruption, the city says it is closing a short section of University Avenue from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for a month so crews can replace a sewer pipe more than 50 years old.

The work, beginning Wednesday, is part of $1.2 million in sewer projects planned for the 2012 fiscal year. Crews will replace a 15-inch diameter pipe with one about 21 inches from Massachusetts to Harbinson avenues—less than a quarter-mile.

“During construction hours, University Avenue westbound between Massachusetts Avenue and Harbinson Avenue will be closed to through traffic,” says the city, which is responsible for 156 miles of sewer pipe.

Traffic will be detoured to Massachusetts Avenue, Boulevard Drive, Marian Drive and back to University Avenue at Harbinson Avenue.  Westbound University Avenue will remain open during the day and weekends.  There will be no impact to eastbound traffic, the city says.

SC Valley Engineering, the project contractor, is doing the work at night to create the least impact to traffic flow and businesses, the city says.  Night work also allows the construction to be completed more quickly and minimize disruptions.

“We apologize for any inconvenience during the construction period,” the city says.  “Should you have any questions, please call the City of La Mesa Engineering Division at 619-667-1166.”
