Supremacy Lost with La Posta's Supreme Burrito
This week's edition of the Burrito Blotter returns to a Casa de Oro favorite.
Taking back to , where I've enjoyed a couple other burritos, was something that I was looking forward to. Scanning the menu, I wanted to find something that was in the middle of traditional and unique.
I saw it in the "Supreme Burrito" ($4.40), which features shredded beef and refried beans. I'm not sure if given the name I was expecting too much, but it fell a little short of my expectations.
Here's the breakdown:

Tortilla
Wonderfully soft and chewy tortilla, which in most cases is a great thing. But with this burrito, I believe a little firmer tortilla would have actually served it well. Explanation forthcoming...
Shredded Beef
The beef was fork tender. It flaked and fell apart almost at will, and was exactly what you want in slow-cooked beef. The taste was good, but not great. I could have used a little more seasoning, or perhaps finished the beef on the flat top to give it a little crispness.

Refried Beans
Perhaps the best single ingredient in the burrito were the beans. They were smoky and creamy and piping hot. They also had tremendous flavor. But be warned, there's a lot of beans in this burrito, and it creates an overall sense of "softness," which will be our key word moving forward.
Sour Cream
The sour cream gave a nice temperature contrast to the hot beans, providing a cool kick. But its creaminess contributed to the "softness" as well.
Green Peppers
These gave essentially the only change in the texture of the burrito. It was great to find bites that had the peppers, because it gave it a little crunch, if ever so small. Many of the other bites were merely beef, beans, and sour cream.
Cheese
Kind of an afterthought in the burrito, sadly. It was in there, but you didn't really notice it. And since you all know how much I love cheese, I would have preferred that indifference lie in another ingredient. Oh well.
Overall
The burrito was very substantial, as are all of the burritos at La Posta. When it came out, it made me do a double-take, and question if I'd be able to finish. But there were just too many similar textural components, and they were all too soft. This is where I think a firmer tortilla would have helped. But a soft tortilla, containing tender, soft beef, creamy soft beans, and sour cream, is just too much of the same thing. No knife and fork required, but it was close.
