Treat Yourself To a Date Night

Spring Valley Farmers Market manager Andrea Hankins wants you to have a date.

The phrase "good things come in small packages" rings no truer than when talking about a modest fruit: the date.

Pound for pound, dates rank up there with some of the world's true super foods. They are packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin A1, Vitamin B1, and minerals like potassium, copper, niacin and iron. They are good for your blood, heart and bones. Their high fiber content are also great for a healthy digestive system.

Not only that, they sweet fruits have all natural sugars and are great for diabetics.

Moroccan Gold is a Madjool date farm located in Bard, California. They are featured in several local farmers markets around the county throughout the week. Andrea Hankins, who as well as the Santee Farmers Market, owns and operates the farm along with her husband.

They sell bags of whole dates in three different sizes: one pound ($6.50), three-pound ($18.75) and five-pound ($30). Pre-chopped dates are sold by the pound ($8.50). In addition, the sell date jam and sugar-free date jam, which is jarred by Jackie's Jams and sell for $6.50 per jar.

The Hankins' have run their farm since 1998. She said that the dates are harvested in August each year, and are sold "until we run out," before the next season starts.
