Prior to 2004, the last "Venus transit" occurred more than a century ago, in 1882, and was used to compute the distance from the Earth to the Sun.
Astronomy buffs across the western hemisphere – and even people who just want to witness a part of history – have been looking skyward Tuesday, in an attempt to see the transit of Venus, as it orbits across Earth's view the sun.
Prior to 2004, the last "Venus transit" occurred more than a century ago, in 1882, and was used to compute the distance from the Earth to the Sun. The next time our neighbor planet orbits between Earth and the sun will be in 2117.
