Van Strikes and Kills Bicyclist on Skyline Drive
An unidentified male in his 50s is dead after a van hits him from behind and he is thrown onto a sidewalk.
A bicyclist headed west on Skyline Drive near Freese Elementary was struck and killed by a van headed in the same direction Sunday morning, according to San Diego police. The victim was a Hispanic male in his 50s whose identity has not been released. Police said the driver of the van, a female around 47 years old traveling alone, stopped and is talking to investigators.
Officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Skyline Drive at 7:31 a.m., and four minutes later a police supervisor arrived, noticed the cyclist was not breathing and began CPR, said Lt. Darryl Hoover of the San Diego Police Department. Medics arrived and took over medical aid, but he was declared dead 16 minutes later.
Hoover said the investigation has determined that the bicyclist was struck on a stretch of Skyline Drive near S. Meadowbrook Drive that is without a bike lane, but he was on the right side of the road when the collision occurred.

“For unknown reasons, the female driving the van veered to the right, struck a curb and then ultimately struck the bicyclist,” Hoover said. “The bicyclist went through the driver's side window of the van and then was launched and came to rest on the sidewalk.”
Hoover said at this point of time no arrests have been made, and no signs of drugs or alcohol have been found on the bicyclist or driver of the van.

“At this point of time we have the driver of the van as the primary cause, and the bicyclist as not,” Hoover said.
