Update: Henry Hashiguchi Identified as Victim of Elder Care Facility Crash

The driver of a parked car allegedly did not engage his parking brake or put the vehicle in gear prior to leaving the vehicle.

The county Medical Examiner's Office identified the 89-year-old crash victim as Henry Hashiguchi. He had been transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital where medical evaluation revealed that he had suffered a closed head injury. He later died from the injuries. La Mesa police are still investigating the incident.

An 89-year-old man was injured Tuesday afternoon when an unoccupied  vehicle rolled down and across Mills Street and crashed into an elder care facility.

At approximately 3:21 p.m. La Mesa Police received a radio call of a vehicle that had crashed into Elder Care Home, 4960 Mills St. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that a male had parked his vehicle at the top of the 4900 block of Mills Street on the east side. The driver allegedly did not engage his parking brake or put the vehicle in gear prior to leaving the vehicle.

It was not initially known that the accident had occurred. According to eyewitnesses, staff at the facility took about 10 minutes to come out and assess the damage after the accident occurred.

The injured man, a resident of Elder Care Home, was reportedly sitting in his chair when the vehicle crashed through the wall, knocking him to the ground. He sustained injuries to the left side of his body and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluation. The injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

The vehicle traveled a distance of approximately 260 feet prior to the collision.
