Vice Mayor Colin Parent Announces Candidacy For 79th Assembly District

The seat is currently held by Dr. Akilah Weber who will not seek reelection due to her run for California State Senate.

LA MESA, CA — La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent has announced his candidacy for the state's 79th Assembly District seat currently held by Dr. Akilah Weber.

"I am excited to announce my candidacy to for the California 79th Assembly District," Parent said in a social media posting. "I’ve never been afraid to speak truth to power, and to call for change where it’s needed."

California's 79th State Assembly District encompasses several East County communities including El Cajon, La Mesa, Spring Valley, La Presa and more.

Parent, who was born and raised in San Diego, has served as a La Mesa city councilmember since 2016, according to his campaign website.

“I believe that public policy has the power to improve people’s lives, and that elected officials have an obligation to be clear-eyed about what’s not working," Parent said. "Today, a lot of things aren’t working, and people are continuing to struggle.

"The California State Assembly is the best place for me to use my experience and knowledge to push for better outcomes for our communities," he continued. "If elected to the State Assembly, I will be a fierce and effective advocate for our region. I’ve never been afraid to speak truth to power, and to call for change where it’s needed.”

Weber will not be seeking reelection due to her run for California State Senate District 39 seat.
