COVID-19 Claims Moraga Police Detective
Corporal Kevin Mooney was a husband, father and grandfather. He was 58-years-old, a retired Marine, and an Iraq veteran.
MORAGA, CA — Moraga Police Corporal Kevin Mooney, who served as the department's detective, died Saturday of complications of COVID-19. He was 58.
Mooney is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
He joined the Moraga Police Department in 2013. According to the department, he excelled in his role as detective. "He had earned a reputation as an fierce advocate for victims and a relentless pursuer of criminals."

Mooney also served as a rangemaster, a field training officer and as the President of the Moraga Police Officers Association.
Before joining Moraga Police, he served as a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy for 21 years, where he worked custody, county patrol and patrolled the City of Orinda for many years.

Mooney also served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps for 29 years, retiring in 2010 at the rank of Major. His service included combat in Iraq.
In Moraga, Mooney began the annual holiday season toy drive, which collected hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
"Kevin’s death is an incredible loss and he will be missed by his family, his Moraga Police family and our entire community," the department said in a statement.
