Active Shooter False Alarms Reported At School, Mall In Marin County: Police

Police investigated a local elementary school and a mall after receiving a report of someone with a gun.

CORTE MADERA, CA — Officers responded to a report of a gun on an elementary school campus and a mall Wednesday in Corte Madera but did not located anyone with a firearm, police said.

Early Wednesday, the Central Marin Police Authority received a suspicious report from the Cove School in Corte Madera.

Police said a school official called after they said an unknown person announced over the school's handheld radios "someone may have a gun."

The school was in session with summer camp and had multiple students and staff on campus. Police said the staff immediately placed the campus on lockdown, conducted a roll call with all staff and called the police.

Officers searched the campus and said they determined none of the staff had made that announcement nor did they see anyone on campus with a gun.

The report is believed to be unfounded at this time, police said.

Later in the day, officers from the CMPA, the Mill Valley Police Department and the Marin County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an active shooter at The Village shopping center in Corte Madera.

Police said they spoke to the reporting party once arriving on the scene and determined this was a secondhand report from the previous call at the Cove School and there was not an active shooter.

Police said they searched the mall to be sure and found no evidence of a threat.

"We understand that such reports can cause significant alarm, and we want to reassure our community that public safety remains our highest priority. We want to thank members of the public and the multiple law enforcement and fire department personnel that responded to this incident," police said.
