Marin To Host Open House For Flood Management Project

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County will welcome community members next month to learn about ongoing efforts to address flooding in the lower Ross Valley.

The Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District is scheduled to brief attendees on work to improve the 50-year-old concrete channel along Corte Madera Creek. The project began in 2022 and is on track for completion in 2026.

"The improvements will help reduce flood risks for residents and businesses in Ross, Kentfield and Larkspur from '25-year flood events,' larger flood events that happen — on average — once every 25 years," the county said in a news release. "The most recent milestone of the project is the completion of the pump station in the Granton Park neighborhood in Kentfield, making it ready for the upcoming winter 2024-2025 season."

Officials said the price tag for the project is $18 million, supported by funding from the state Department of Water Resources, State Coastal Conservancy, county Sea Level Rise Funds, the American Rescue Plan Act, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife, along with a grant from the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation and Zone 9 storm drainage fees.

The next phase of construction is slated to begin next summer.

The open house is scheduled for Oct. 15 and will give neighbors a chance to drop in and learn about the different components of the project.
