UPDATE: SD Police Release Name of 23-Year-Old Shooting Victim Slain on School Campus

Homicide investigators were called to the nearby scene early Friday morning.

SAN DIEGO - Police released the identity Friday night of a slain man who was discovered on an area campus in the early morning by a staff member who was reportedly outside to raise the high school's flag.

Authorities say it was Cherkeiray Jones, 23, of San Diego, who had suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. He was reportedly found around 5:45 a.m. on the Gompers Preparatory Academy grounds located on San Diego's west side.

Around that time, the witnessing school employee called 911 asking help for a "person down" at the Chollas View educational institution in the 1000 block of 47th Street, San Diego police officer Tony Martinez said.

Police said early Friday that Jones was already dead when they arrived, adding that there were not any students at the charter secondary school at the time. School officials canceled all classes and activities for the day as homicide detectives reported to the scene.

"As you may have heard on the news, there is a community crime investigation taking place at and around GPA," said a message on the academy's Facebook page. "... Campus will officially reopen to students after spring break vacation on Monday, April 3."
