KTLA Story Causes Rancor In OC Transgender Community: Report

A story on parents in Los Alamitos angry that transgender camp counselors oversaw their children has sparked controversy.

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — Members of Orange County's transgender community are expressing their frustrations toward a story aired by KTLA that seemingly paints transgender camp counselors in a negative light, the OC Register reported.

The story centered on two mothers of students at Weaver Elementary School in Los Alamitos upset their daughters were reportedly overseen by transgender counselors at an overnight camp using "they/them" pronouns, the Register reported.

The KTLA story said the parents weren't accusing the counselors of inappropriate behavior but that the Los Alamitos Unified School District failed to inform parents of the sexual identity of the camp's counselors, the paper reported.

Members of the county's transgender community told the Register stories like the one from KTLA could "create a panic that trans people are dangerous" and contribute to negative portrayals in the media.
