SEAL BEACH, CA — A 20-year-old lifeguard may never walk again following an injury he suffered Friday morning while working at Seal Beach, according to authorities and a report by CBS News.

Seal Beach officials said in a statement that Junior Lifeguard Instructor Isaiah Osorio suffered a "severe" injury just before noon while at work and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Osorio was on a surfboard in the ocean when a wave crashed onto him, according to a report by CBS News. The impact caused him to hit his head on the ocean floor and left him with a spinal injury, according to the report.

Osorio, a graduate of Los Alamitos High School, had been working as a lifeguard in Seal Beach since June 2023, according to the city of Seal Beach.

Following his injury, community members have rallied for him, raising more than $110,000 through a fundraiser started Saturday.
