Earth Day Events Will Go All Month in Malibu

The City of Malibu is going green by celebrating Earth Day for a month starting by participating in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 23.

The nearly decade old event asks that households and businesses worldwide save energy by turning off their non-essential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

During its March 11 meeting, the Malibu City Council proclaimed March 23 through April 30 as "Earth Month."

"Every day is Earth Day in Malibu," Mayor Lou La Monte said. "Our advocacy for environmental protection reflects the values that make us the City we are today."

Along with commemorating the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, the City will post daily environmental tips on its website and host several recycling and gardening workshops at City Hall at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.

"Malibu leads by example in promoting ecological awareness and respect not only through our implementation of innovative environmental projects, but also through providing educational opportunities that empower our residents and visitors to be environmental stewards," La Monte said.

Waste to Waves Collection, April 13 - 20, during regular business hours: Bring #6 white block foam materials to be recycled into surfboard blanks

Community Shred Day, April 20, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Document shredding and recycling

Electronic Waste Collection, April 20, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Household batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs are accepted

Oil and Paint Roundup, April 20, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Water-based paints, automotive batteries and fluids are accepted

Smart Gardening Workshop, April 20, 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.: Teaches grass recycling, composting, water efficient and fire-wise gardening. Composting bins will be sold at subsidized prices
