Letter to the Editor: No on R!

It is upsetting to see our City Council, Planning Commission and city staff become subservient to Mr. Reiner

Growing up in Malibu we used to dread the familiar “get in the car kids.” Swim team, back school shopping, appointments, even High School and Synagogues were “in town or over the hill.” It was not unusual to be in the car two hours after school and on the weekends.

My family was always passionate about the Malibu way of life. So we got involved. We started the first Malibu swim team. We ran the snack bar to support for Pop Warner. We worked to build the Malibu Jewish Center & Synagogue. We even worked to bring back to school shopping to Malibu.

Today a new generation leads the way, yet now more than ever I appreciate the commitment my parent’s generation made to turn Malibu into a great Community. That commitment, effort and investment was extraordinary. I hope to follow in their footsteps so that my kids will be able to experience the Malibu way of life.

It is upsetting to see our City Council, Planning Commission and city staff become subservient to Mr. Reiner. We get it, you don’t like having popular stores and services near your weekend home. Well, I don’t like being in the car half the day “driving to town or over the hill” and I don’t like a team of outside consultants taking the decisions away from our elected officials. I’m particularly concerned about the financial exposure our city could take on.

I want to thank Steve Soboroff for being the brave face of the No on R effort. Eight (8) former Mayor’s also support No on R but it might have looked poorly if Mr. Reiner was yelling and screaming at the Mayor. Steve, for as long as I’ve known you, you’ve been a trusted and committed public citizen and once again you’ve stepped up.

Measure R has fostered an interesting discussion about the future of Malibu. Mr. Reiner we don’t need you taking control of our City. There are residents here committed, putting in the effort, and making the investment to protect the Malibu way of life.

No on R!
