Mel Gibson Expresses Frustration Against Malibu DUI Checkpoint

The actor and director asks Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff's Deputies why they are harassing him.

Mel Gibson apparently got upset at the DUI checkpoint last weekend in Malibu, where he was caught without his license on him.

Because Gibson did not have his license with him and he was forced to go into secondary screening about 1:15 a.m. last Saturday on Carbon Canyon Road at Pacific Coast Highway, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Being shepherded into additional screening prompted Gibson to rant: "Why are you harassing me?" and "I have had problems with you Lost Hills [Malibu] deputies in the past," according to TMZ.

Whitmore confirmed the report, saying that the response is not uncommon at DUI checkpoints.

"People get irritated at DUI checkpoints all the time," Whitmore said. He said Gibson was given a warning and allowed to drive home.

Gibson is no stranger to Lost Hills/Malibu Sheriff's Station deputies. In 2006, Gibson was arrested in Malibu on suspicion of DUI and allegedly went off on an anti-Semitic rant.

Gibson is not the first person to rail against DUI checkpoints in Malibu. Malibu locals regularly criticize the effectiveness of the operations in the comment section of Malibu Patch.

The sheriff's department claims well publicized checkpoints help reduce the number of alcohol- and drug-related crashes.
