Stolen Rembrandt Drawing Worth $250,000 Remains Missing

A Rembrandt drawing worth $250,000 that was stolen over the weekend from the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Marina del Rey remains missing, a sheriff's official said Monday.

The artwork known as "The Judgment" was done in quill pen and ink circa 1655 and is about 10 inches by 6 inches, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Officials earlier said the stolen work was a lithograph, but later announced that it was a drawing by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.

There have been no new developments in the case, Whitmore said Monday.

The drawing was swiped from an art exhibit in the lobby of the hotel Saturday between 10:20 p.m. and 10:35 p.m. when a curator was distracted by another person, Whitmore said.

"Our detectives are reviewing the hotel security video for information identifying those involved," Whitmore said in a statement. "The hotel has top quality security. We believe this was a well-thought out and well-planned theft."

The drawing was on exhibit at the hotel but is owned by the Linearis Institute, a San Francisco-based group that collects, exhibits and auctions fine art. A telephone call Monday to the institute was not immediately returned.
