Sunny Skies, Vacant Congressional Seat and Budget Challenge

Residents in the 36th Congressional District, which includes Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey and Del Rey, don't have a voice in the House of Representatives.

Today is March 1. It is the 60th day of the year. We are under a waning crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 5:51 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for mostly sunny skies with a high near 62 degrees and mostly cloudy tonight with a low around 46 degrees. There's a 20 percent chance of showers tomorrow with a high near 61 degrees.

2. Playa del Rey resident Phil Jackson and the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers are in Minnesota to play the Timberwolves tonight. Former UCLA star Kevin Love of the Timberwolves has recorded a double-double in points and rebounds in 46 straight games and is nearing Moses Malone's NBA record of 51 games that was set over two seasons. Love had zero points and only seven rebounds Nov. 19 against the Lakers in Minneapolis -- the last time he failed to get a double-double.

3. Residents living in the 36th Congressional District, which includes Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey and Del Rey, don't have a voice in the House of Representatives. Jane Harman, a Democrat from Venice, left her seat Monday to join a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. Gov. Jerry Brown has 14 days to set a date for a special election to replace her.

4. Have you taken the Los Angeles Budget Challenge? Well, it's been extended to Friday, so take 15 minutes to let the city know where you think it should cut expenditures increase revenue sources. You can participate in the budget challenge right here.

5. Did you know you can follow Marina del Rey Patch, which also covers Del Rey and Playa del Rey, on Facebook and Twitter? Did you also know that we're creating a new Moms Council that we hope will range from the working mom to the stay-at-home mom to the stay-at-home dad to the PTA parents to the soccer moms. The Moms Council will use its motherly expertise to facilitate discussions about parenting and help guide parenting coverage for the site.
