β€œFund-a-Nurse Friday: Bay Area Supports Nursing in Africa”

SF Bay Area's Gretta Foundation supports Nursing Education in Africa

(San Francisco, CA) – People in Africa who are badly in need of medical care are now getting help thanks to a San Francisco Bay Area non-profit. But more can be accomplished through β€œFund-a-Nurse Friday” donations.

The Board of Directors for The Gretta Foundation www.GrettaFoundation.org recently announced selection more candidates for admission to nursing and midwifery school in Uganda. But their needs are many.

β€œOne student came without anything so the school has started by shopping for a mattress, bed sheets, and other basic needs,” said Sister Cathy Nakiboneka, who visited the Bay Area last year. β€œEverything on admission will be provided,” she added.

The Gretta Foundation funds programs for nursing and mid-wife candidates. Emphasis is placed on supporting conflict survivors and AIDS orphans. Each scholarship provides the recipient with an annual tuition, room and board, living allowance, books, school uniforms, and clinical supplies.

Graduating scholars are required to serve in their country’s clinics and hospitals for a period of time commensurate with each year of academic assistance. To date, The Gretta Foundation has funded 60 Gretta Graduates currently working in their respective home communities. The new campaign aims to fund the addition of the 10 new nursing students.

The Foundation’s mission is to increase the number of frontline nurses and midwives in disease-burdened countries through the provision of in-country scholarships. The Gretta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 2007 by Meg Styles in honor of her mother, the late Dr. Margretta (β€œGretta”) Madden Styles. Dr. Styles was Dean of the UCSF School of Nursing from 1976 through 1985 before becoming President of the American Nursing Association, and the International Council of Nursing.
