Burglary Suspect Briefly Escapes Custody In SMC
A man arrested on a burglary warrant was able to slip out of an ankle restraint and escape custody before he was caught in Menlo Park.
MENLO PARK, CA — A burglary suspect arrested on a no-bail warrant escaped police custody Thursday and was later recaptured in Menlo Park, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
In a news release Friday, officials identified the suspect as Nathan James Hubbard, 29, of San Jose. The sheriff's office said detectives arrested him on a warrant for burglary of an inhabited dwelling around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Hubbard was a suspect in other burglary cases and was taken to the Hall of Justice for questioning. While he was there, investigators alive Hubbard freed himself from a metal leg restraint and escaped police custody.

The sheriff's office began a search operation and notified neighboring agencies of the incident. Within two hours, investigators reported Hubbard was located in Menlo Park, taken back into custody, and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.
"The San Mateo Sheriff's Office would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude to our invaluable law enforcement partners, including the Redwood City Police, the California Highway Patrol, the Atherton Police Department, and the Menlo Park Police Department," Sgt. Javier Acosta wrote Friday. "Your support and collaboration were instrumental in swiftly capturing the suspect."

According to the sheriff's office, Hubbard will face charges related to the warrant, along with added charges that remain pending.
