The East Palo Alto Police Department bought 74 firearms from local residents Saturday as part of the department's fourth annual gun buy-back program, a police sergeant said.
Police launched the program in 2009 following an incident in which a 12-year-old accidentally shot a toddler with a rifle found in a garage, police said.
Dozens of local residents turned in firearms to police between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, swapping their guns for cash.
