MENLO PARK, CA -- A former Peruvian president wanted on suspicion of bribery in South America was arrested and accused of public intoxication at Menlo Park eatery over the weekend, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Alejandro Toledo Manrique, 72, of Los Altos, a former president of Peru and occasional visiting scholar at Stanford University, was taken into custody Sunday after he “caused a disturbance" that the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department noticed. He refused to leave the restaurant when the restaurant staff asked then called the authorities, sheriff’s spokeswoman Detective Rosemerry Blankswade told the newspaper.

Sheriff's deputies who responded approached Toledo at about 10:30 p.m. at the restaurant on Alameda De Las Pulgas in an unincorporated area west of Menlo Park, the Mercury News added. He “objectively showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol,” Blankswade said.
