Jewelry Theft Scam Prompts Alert From Sheriff's Office
In a recent case, deputies said a suspect used a hug as a distraction to take an elderly woman's diamond necklace.
WEST MENLO PARK, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office shared a warning Wednesday after an elderly victim was targeted by an increasingly common jewelry theft scam.
"The scam, which is known to law enforcement, often targets unsuspecting or elderly residents in public places such as parking lots, parks, or even outside the person's home," the sheriff's office said. "Thieves use deceptive tactics to steal valuable items such as jewelry from their victims."
The most recent incident happened Monday in West Menlo Park, where deputies say a woman was walking in her neighborhood when a man and a woman pulled up in a car and asked for directions.
After helping, investigators said the woman in the car got out and hugged the victim, using it as a distraction to steal a diamond necklace that had been a gift from the victim's late husband. The sheriff's office said it was actively investigating the case and working to track down the suspects.
Investigators shared a few tips to prevent similar crimes in the future:
- Remain vigilant and use caution when approached by strangers, especially in situations that seem overly friendly or invasive.
- If you encounter such a scenario, maintain a safe distance and avoid physical contact.
- If you feel unsafe, leave the area immediately and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
