Menlo Park Funnels Millions Into Tech Fund

Menlo Park City Council funneled $2.7 million into a fund that will be used to develop the city’s Technology Master Plan, with a unanimous vote on Tuesday.

The Technology Master Plan is one of dozens of projects within the city’s Capital Improvement Plan, which outlines significant endeavors that are expected to cost more than $25,000 to implement. The Capital Improvement Plan forecasts  expenditures for the next five years. It is updated annually.

The latest version of the document plans for public improvements that will take place sometime between now and the 2017-18 fiscal year.

The City of Menlo Park has allocated $3,111,000 for developing and implementing the Technology Master Plan, according to the Capital Improvement Plan. That is the total budget for the next five years.  The money will be used to enhance the city’s financial system, web services, and graphical information services, according to the CIP.

On Tuesday, $2.7 million from the city’s General Fund was transferred to the fund earmarked for General Capital Improvement. These funds will be used to inflate the Technology Master Plan, and fund the update of the Housing Element project, which has cost the city more than $1.3 million to date, according to city records.

The first phase of the Technology Master Plan will include assessing the city's technological resources and evaluating them to determine whether they require upgrades. A consultant will be hired to do this with a City Committee, according to the CIP.

More funding may be required when the TMP is complete, according to the CIP.
