Peninsula Man Sentenced For Drug Trafficking: DOJ

A traffic stop in 2016 led to Menlo Park police discovering drugs, a gun and ammunition intended for dealing, the DOJ reported.

MENLO PARK, CA -- A 39-year-old Menlo Park man was sentenced to eight years, three months in prison on drug trafficking charges and for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, U.S. Attorney David L. Anderson announced Friday.

The sentence followed a conviction resulting from a three-day trial.

The evidence at trial demonstrated that on Feb. 25, 2016 law enforcement officers stopped Jameel Collins while he was driving a white Cadillac Deville with unlawfully tinted windows and expired registration tags. Officers noticed a bag of marijuana near the car console and a scale in the passenger seat. Collins was taken into custody, and a subsequent search of the car resulted in recovery of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, a Glock Model 43 handgun and two magazines loaded with a total of 13 rounds of ammunition, the Department of Justice reported. These items all were found stowed in an air vent on the left side of the steering wheel.

A federal grand jury handed down a superseding indictment Feb. 20, 2018 charging Collins with four counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, another of being a felon in possession of a firearm and further more related to drug trafficking. Collins was convicted of all but the last count.

In addition to the prison term, Collins was sentenced to serve four years of supervised release that will begin after his prison term has been served. Collins has been in custody since his arrest and he will begin serving his sentence immediately.
