4 Arrested, 16 Cited During SMC DUI Checkpoint
A checkpoint on El Camino Real screened hundreds of drivers over the weekend, resulting in multiple arrests in Millbrae.

MILLBRAE, CA β Nearly 1,300 vehicles were screened during a weekend DUI checkpoint in Millbrae, leading to four arrests and 16 citations, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies staffed the checkpoint on El Camino Real between 6 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday.
In an update shared Monday, the sheriff's offices said 1,291 vehicles were screened, and deputies performed more than a dozen field sobriety tests. Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, and a third was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, officials said.

A fourth driver was arrested for an active warrant.
Deputies wrote 16 citations, including nine for driving while unlicensed and five for driving without their driver's license with them.

The average driver convicted of a first-time DUI can expect to pay $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with having their license suspended. The sheriff's office urged residents to utilize a rideshare, taxi or designated driver if they plan to be under the influence.
DUI checkpoints are funded via grants awarded each year by the state Office of Traffic Safety.
