DUI Checkpoint Announced In This Bay Area Town

The sheriff's office has announced the time, date and location for an upcoming DUI checkpoint.

MILLBRAE, CA — There is a DUI checkpoint coming Friday in Millbrae.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of El Camino Real in Millbrae.

"Ensuring the safety of our roadways is a shared responsibility. By committing to responsible driving and adhering to traffic regulations, we can collectively make our streets safer for both pedestrians and drivers alike," police said.

Police said they determine DUI checkpoint locations based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

"The primary purpose of a DUI checkpoint is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," police said.

The Sheriff’s Office said it wants to remind community members that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Also, some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving. Medicinal and recreational cannabis are legal, driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, police said.

Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, police said.
