MILLBRAE, CA β€” Voters in the Millbrae Elementary School District in San Mateo County have approved a property tax increase and extension, according to preliminary results.

Measure A received 71 percent "yes" votes to 29 percent "no" votes in unofficial results from Tuesday's election, the county's elections department said. It required a two-thirds majority to pass.

The measure gives nine more years of life to a parcel tax, first passed in 2018, and increased the amount to $125 a year from $97.

A parcel tax is a form of property tax calculated per unit of property, rather than determined by the property's assessed value.

The tax will generate about $925,000 a year for the school district, which has about 2,200 elementary and middle school students.

The district said the funds will go to science labs, technology, engineering, and math instruction, and to restore art and music programs.

Had the tax expired, the district said, it could lose $600,000 in annual funding it relies on.

Final results will be certified by June 1.
