The Millbrae Lions Scout House, adjacent to Taylor Middle School, will be renovated into a youth center through the help of volunteers and fundraisers.
The Millbrae Community Youth Center Project will cost about $125,000 and should be completed by early 2012. The 2800-square-foot log cabin building was shut down in 1999, and after years of vandalism, the Lions Club, the Millbrae School District and the city, decided to retrofit the facilities into something beneficial for children and teens.
Denis Fama, MCYC fundraising chair, said the building is generally in good condition, but it will need a new roof, floor, doors and windows. About $8,000 has been raised to date.

"We've had many volunteers help us," Fama said. "We've had offers from people wanting to donate doors, windows and plumbing." He expects the roof to cost about $20,000.
On March 27 and 28, 2010 about 70 volunteers, half of whom were under 18, helped clean the site, removing graffiti, sweeping, removing debris and painting. The bathrooms and a two stove kitchen were renovated in 1986.

The Scout House was built in 1954 and the Lions Club signed a 99 year lease with the Millbrae School District. Once the building is restored, the city will take ownership and it will serve as a meeting space for youth clubs, classes and after school programs.
