Several vehicles were stopped for various violations on Friday as police scanned for drunk drivers.

MENIFEE, CA — Three drivers were issued citations and one car was impounded during a DUI checkpoint operation in Menifee on Friday, Officer Chase Coburn told Patch.

A two-officer enforcement team scanned for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol at an undisclosed location between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m., the Menifee Police Department said.

No arrests were made, Coburn confirmed to Patch.

The department says it is planning a series of more DUI enforcement operations throughout the year.

“Driving under the influence is dangerous, illegal and puts every person driving on the roads at risk. Drivers
need to understand the dangers of driving impaired,” Sergeant Dan Beare said. “We are out there and will not
hesitate to stop drivers who drive impaired.”

Police hope to improve public safety through these efforts by removing those who may be drunk or high behind the wheel from the road.

Police warn that it isn't just alcohol that can impair driving. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. And while recreational marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of it is not.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and have their license suspended.

Funding for this checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
