Armed Suspect Shot In La Quinta: Sheriff

Riverside County Sheriff's Department responded to the Vista Dunes area of La Quinta after calls of an assault with a deadly weapon.

LA QUINTA, CA — An assault with a deadly weapon suspect was shot by deputy gunfire after allegedly failing to comply to commands in La Quinta, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies from the Thermal Sheriff's Station responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday in the 44000 block of Vista Dunes Lane, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced.

Upon arrival, deputies located the suspect who was allegedly armed with a knife. The suspect allegedly failed to comply with deputy commands, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect, whose identity was withheld, was struck by gunfire, and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and took the person to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Sergeant Deirdre Vickers of the sheriff's department, a knife was located at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the interaction.

The involved deputy was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, while an investigation is conducted. Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff's Force Investigations Detail were leading the investigation.
