Before officers arrived, Robles left but he returned a short time later only to leave again when he spotted a police presence, according to the department.

A short chase ensued as Robles led officers back to the Mountain Glen Circle residence. He got out of his vehicle "and attempted to force entry into the home," according to police.

Officers used less-than-lethal force while commanding Robles to surrender but he did not comply, the department reported.

At one point, Robles turned toward officers while reaching for a handgun in his waistband. That's when two officers fired on him, the agency said.

The handgun was loaded, according to police.

Robles was sent to an area hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The two officers involved in the shooting were not injured. Per department policy, they were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident by the Riverside County Force Investigations Detail, which includes representatives of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
