'Gun Threat' At RivCo High School Prompts Lockdown This Week
A RivCo high school was locked down Thursday amid social posts that a student on the grounds was carrying a handgun. Here's what happened.

MENIFEE, CA — Menifee Police responded to the Heritage High School campus on Briggs Road on Thursday on reports of a student carrying a handgun on campus, officials say.
No arrests were announced, and the teen and family remain unidentified as of this report.
Shortly before 10 a.m., the Heritage High School Student Resource officer learned of a social media post that a boy was on the Briggs Road school grounds carrying a handgun in a school hallway, the Menifee Police Department shared.

The school lockdown was implemented about an hour later.
Students were kept inside classrooms as multiple police units arrived at that time. Officers then conducted a search to determine whether the threat was credible, according to Chase Coburn, police spokesperson.

"During the search, officers were able to identify the student, and subsequently located him on campus," Coburn said. "The student was detained without incident. A search of the student's backpack revealed an air pistol, a BB gun that lacked the required orange safety tip and resembled a real firearm."
Additional social media posts showing images of that same student with other weapons prompted officers to detain the teenager and obtain a search warrant to search his family's home.
"This investigation remains active, and additional details will be provided when they become available," Coburn said.
The lockdown was lifted, and no one was hurt during the incident, Coburn said. "The Menifee Police Department would like to commend the school staff for their prompt reporting and cooperation, which allowed officers to respond quickly and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
"There is currently no ongoing threat to the school campus or the surrounding community
